who is Diane von Furstenberg?
Who is designer Diane von Furstenberg? You may know about and wear her designs but, what do you know about her life?
Did you know that she was formerly a real Princess. Yes, she got her last name, Von Furstenberg, from her marriage to Prince Egon of Furstenberg, where she instantly became a Princess, Princess Diane von Furstenberg. She later divorced and lost her Princess status but kept the name.
She was born Diane Simone Michelle Halfin in Brussels, Belgium in 1946.
Diane studied Economics in Switzerland and later moved to Paris and worked
with photographer Albert Koski. Her next career move took her to Italy where
she started working with textiles. And so was born her first silk jersey
dress - something she would become famous for in the future.
What has Diane Von Furstenberg done?
Who would have thought that such a famous and iconic fashion designer would
have studied Economics, and not some more art related subject.
Diane's first big success came in 1974 when she designed the iconic wrap dress for women.
Done in a jersey stretch fabric, the wrap dress
would become one of the major classic dress styles for women since its inception in 1974.
Proof of the overwhelming success of the wrap dress design was the front cover feature of Newsweek in 1976. Not only did she get the front cover but she ousted Gerald Ford for the prestigious cover.
Gerald had just won his first Republican Presidential Primary and was definitely worthy of the Newsweek magazine cover.
Can you imagine having achieved the Presidential Primary result and being outshined by a fashion designer. This is a testament to the true value and importance of fashion in Western culture.
What is Diane Von Furstenberg doing now?
She has since been involved in various clothing, accessory, perfume, cosmetics, home decor design, and even publishing ventures - most with great success.
Diane's designs have been seen on various Hollywood celebrities including Jessica Alba, Susan Sarandon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna and Michelle Obama.
